What is a PDF Metadata Editor?

A PDF metadata editor lets you view and change the document properties stored inside a PDF file — such as the title, author, subject, and keywords — directly in your browser, without Adobe Acrobat or any software installation.

At PDFFixNow, you can edit PDF metadata online for free. Works on Windows, Mac, iPhone, and Android.

What metadata is stored in a PDF? Every PDF file contains an internal header with document information fields. The most commonly used fields are: Title (the document name), Author (who created it), Subject (a brief description), Keywords (searchable tags), Creator (the application that created the source document), and Producer (the application that generated the PDF). These fields are invisible in the main document view but are read by PDF viewers, search engines, and document management systems.

Why metadata matters: Correct metadata makes PDFs easier to find, archive, and manage. Incorrect or missing metadata can cause PDFs to appear with wrong names in document libraries, fail to surface in search results, or reveal unintended personal information about the author or software environment.

How to Edit PDF Metadata in 3 Simple Steps

1

Upload your PDF

Drag and drop your PDF into the upload box or click to browse your device. The tool reads the current metadata values and pre-fills the form fields so you can see what is already stored.

2

Edit the metadata fields

Update any field you want to change — Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, or Producer. Leave a field blank to clear it. You can edit one field or all of them at the same time.

3

Download your updated PDF

Click "Update Metadata" to apply your changes. Download the updated PDF immediately. The visible content of your document is completely unchanged — only the metadata fields you edited are updated.

When Should You Edit PDF Metadata?

Editing PDF metadata is useful in many professional, academic, and personal workflows. Here are the most common situations where updating document properties makes a real difference.

  • Correct an incorrect author name on a PDF before sharing it with a client or colleague.
  • Add a descriptive title and subject to a PDF report so it appears correctly in document management systems.
  • Add searchable keywords to a PDF so it surfaces correctly in desktop search and document library tools.
  • Remove the creator or producer field that reveals which software or version was used to create the file.
  • Update the title and author of a PDF ebook or digital product before publishing or distributing it.
  • Clean up metadata on a batch of PDF reports exported from software with auto-generated or placeholder titles.
  • Remove your personal name from a PDF document before sending it anonymously or for review.
  • Add subject and keyword metadata to archived PDF documents to improve retrieval in a digital archive.

Tips for Editing PDF Metadata Effectively

Our tool pre-fills all fields with the current metadata values. Review what is already stored before making changes — you may find fields with incorrect, placeholder, or unwanted content you were not aware of.

The Title field should describe what the document is about, not repeat the filename. A title like "Q2 2025 Financial Report — Acme Corp" is more useful to readers and search tools than "report_final_v3.pdf".

The Keywords field accepts comma-separated terms. Include specific, relevant terms that describe the document content — for example "invoice, Q3, 2025, Acme Corp, payment". These keywords are indexed by desktop search tools and some document management systems.

The Creator field often contains your software name and version (e.g. "Microsoft Word 16.0") and Producer may contain your PDF generator details. Before sharing sensitive documents externally, consider clearing these fields to avoid revealing your software environment.

If you want to remove all metadata entirely rather than editing specific fields, use our Remove PDF Metadata tool. It strips all document information and XMP metadata in one click — faster than clearing each field individually.

After downloading your updated PDF, open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader or your browser PDF viewer and check File > Document Properties (or equivalent) to verify that the metadata fields show exactly the values you intended.

Yes. Our PDF metadata editor is fully mobile-friendly. Open PDFFixNow in Safari (iPhone/iPad) or Chrome (Android), upload your PDF, edit the fields, and download the updated file — all from your phone or tablet without installing any app.

Standard PDF metadata (also called DocInfo) is stored in the PDF file header as simple key-value pairs (Title, Author, Subject, Keywords). XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) is an additional metadata format embedded in PDFs that can store a much richer set of structured information. Our editor updates the standard DocInfo fields. For complete metadata removal including XMP data, use our Remove PDF Metadata tool.

Google and other major search engines primarily read the visible text content of a PDF rather than its metadata keywords field. However, the Title field is used by search engines as a ranking signal and is often displayed as the result title in search. Accurate titles improve click-through rates. Document management systems and desktop search tools (like Windows Search and macOS Spotlight) do index metadata keywords.

Our tool edits the standard text-based metadata fields (Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer). Creation date and modification date are stored as structured timestamp fields and are not currently editable through our interface. To remove all date-related metadata along with other information, use our Remove PDF Metadata tool.

Free users can edit metadata on PDFs up to 50 MB. This covers the vast majority of PDF documents encountered in typical workflows. Metadata editing is a lightweight operation that does not re-encode or reprocess the document content, so even large files are processed quickly.
